Phentermine Topiramate Review

If you are a bit overweight or obese, you have some good news. The FDA has changed it’s “deny every weight loss drug policy” and is moving in the right direction.

Ironically, the FDA did not have a single Bariatrician or weight loss doctor on their panel that reviews weight loss medications until recently.

As soon as they have a bariatric doctor on the panel, coincidentally or otherwise, they have two new weight loss medications – Qsymia which is a combination of Phentermine and Topiramate and Belviq (Lorcaserin).

First, the FDA approved Belviq(Lorcaserin) in June of 2012 followed a month later by an approval for Qsymia.

How do Qsymia and Belviq compare?

Here is the information on Qsymia™ (Qsymia is the trade mark of Vivus, Inc.)

W8MD weight loss, sleep and medspa Center’s of America’s unique insurance physician weight loss clinics in greater Philadelphia, NJ and NYC have extensive experience in both the brand name Qsymia™ or the generic combination of Phentermine along with Topiramate (generic version is similar to the brand name although not identical as there no generic equivalent available) for successful weight loss along with Very Low Calorie or Low Calorie Diets, Behavior Modification, and other evidence based measures.

Cost of Qsymia Brand Name Weight Loss Medication

Approximately $275.00 to $300.00 per month at about $5.00 a pill although the manufacturer coupons in eligible patients can bring the cost down to about $150.00 per month.

Cost of the generic combination of Phentermine and Topiramate at W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers is only $50.00 USD biweekly for both Phentermine and Topirmate at a dollar a pill for a significant cost saving with the generic combination.

  1. 8 causes of weight gain

If you are overweight or obese and needs 20 pounds or more and you have health insurance, chances are that you might be lucky to be able to lose the weight using the unique W8MD’s insurance physician weight loss program.

Before losing weight, you may want to understand the factors causing the weight (causes of weight gain). Here are 8 common causes of weight gain.

    1. Metabolic causes of weight gain such as excess amount of a hormone produced in the body called insulin. Most people think Insulin is important only for diabetics but the fact is that we all need insulin. Since our current Western diet of a grain or starch based diet, we have to produce more and more of this anabolic body building hormone called insulin. It is believed that this along with lack of exercise leads insulin resistance. As a compensation to insulin resistance, our body has to produce more and more of this body building hormone which in turn leads to weight gain in the tummy and upper part of the body. Studies have shown that up to 70 percent of the population in the United States have some degree of insulin resistance and about 35 percent of all adults already have prediabetes or metabolic syndrome. Understanding this very important cause of weight gain forms the foundation for weight loss and healthy dieting. Our obsession with low fatty foods along with a lot of misinformation lead to this huge problem of insulin resistance worldwide and is a global epidemic. In fact, some people call this diasbesity – a combination of obesity and prediabetes or diabetes.

    2. Lack of proper sleep, sleep apnea, sleep deprivation or circadian disturbances can also cause weight gain.

    3. Food addiction or carbohydrate addiction which in turn can be due or insulin resistance can lead to weight gain.

4.lack of proper physical activity can also lead to weight gain.

    5. Certain Medications may also be a cause of weight gain – especially many of the psychiatric medications such as anti-depressants, antipsychotic medications etc.

    6. Nutritional deficiencies can also sometimes lead to weight gain.

    7. Genetic factors can lead to weight gain.

    8. Stress and emotional eating can also be a factor in your weight gain.

Obesity or weight gain is not a personal weakness or lack of will power issue as much as one of the above 8 causes of weight gain. Consulting with specially trained weight loss or obesity medicine doctors at W8MD medical weight loss centers can help you understand the complex causes of weight gain and help you lose weight.
